Johnny’s Story - Intelligent Tutoring System

Johnny is a bright young rising 7th grader. But like many other students we work with, he struggles with dyslexia. At the end of his 6th grade year, he read at the 3rd grade level. His mother enrolled him in a two-week, intensive summer school that used New Century’s lessons, written in Noah Text®, and is designed for students struggling with dyslexia. They also played games using the vocabulary words from the story, and they discussed the underlying story from the lessons in groups.

Unafraid of a challenge, Johnny completed all 21 lessons, based on the first of three chapter books, during the two-week summer school. When he started the program, he could read 66 words over 60 seconds on a 5th grade reading fluency test. By the end of the two weeks, he could read 97 words in 60 seconds, a 61% increase. He also improved his scores on the 3rd grade level tests, and his vocabulary and reading comprehension scores also improved. He reported that he felt like a stronger reader and more hopeful about accomplishing his learning goals in school. He also asked to use the next set of lessons that are based on book two in the chapter book series – an extraordinary statement from a dyslexic child.
